Individual Details

Margaret L. Blewett

(Jun 1836 - )

The Marriage bond of Samuel and Margaret Blewett was dated 5 Feb 1856. Benjamin Young was security.
[Benjamin quite possibly a brother-in-law who had married Rebecca H. Blewett.]

A number of Blewett graves are in Auburn Cemetery in Logan Co KY. None are old enough to be parents of Margaret. Her name is found as both Margaret L. and Sarah Margaret; perhaps she had three names. However, the initials L and S are often indistinguishable in the old handwriting.

Many Blewetts were living in Warren Co in 1850. The only famiily with a daughter named Margaret or Sarah of the right age, was the family of Susanna Blewitt, age 52, head of household with what appears to be 7 children including a daughter named Sarah, who was 16, born 1834, and Margaret, born 1836. Susanna [Harris] was the widow of Thomas Blewett. Yet this Margaret is shown as marrying James H. Briggs, 1856, in databases online - a marriage said to have taken place in Sumner Co, TN, a most unlikely place for her to be, since her mother was still living in Warren Co in 1860 with assorted siblings. The Blewett information as found on line is highly suspect - all databases I viewed listed Thomas as having died in 1881, yet he was not in the 1850 census with Susanna, nor was he present with her subsequently. In one of the databases listing his death as 1881, was a note that there was a Warren Co KY Will for Thomas H. Blewett, proved in Warren Co Court, May 1848 - obviously he was already dead by May of 1848 and did not live until 1881. The will is said to name children Rebecca H. Young, Fanny Readen [her married name was actually Peden] and youngest daughter Nancy; his wife Susanah as Executrix. The widow Susannah is thought to be a daughter of Christopher Harris & Elizabeth Grubbs who had ties back to Madison Co KY and to Albemarle Co VA - Christopher is thought to be buried in Simpson Co KY.

I believe this to be the most likely Blewett genealogy.
William Blewet was born 20 Dec 1706, Cornwall, England and died after writing his will 15 Jun 1790, Anson Co NC. He gave the following:

William is said to have first married Sarah Garton, 30 Jul 1751, Old Swedes Church, Wilmington, new Castle Co DE. She was the daughter of John Garton and Rebekah Gibbons. Sarah died about 1761 in Anson Co, NC. William married a Miss White who died soon after the marriage. He married Elizabeth Morris, who died about 1812, Richmond Co NC

There are said to have been five children by the first wife: Thomas (1754-1835, Richmond Co NC); Jean, Susannah, Hannahy, and Rebecca.
Nine or ten children by the second wife: William Jr. (1762-1843, Decatur Co GA), Elizabeth, Eli (15 Mar 1765, d. 1837 Warren Co KY); Mary "Polly", Morris, David, James (b. 1774, m. Elizabeth Dawson 1769, Old Swedes Church; Susannah; and Nancy who married Merit Lee. Another daughter Anne is sometimes shown but I think someone simply did not realize Anne named in the will would be the same person as Nancy.

Eli Blewett is said born 15 Mar 1775 in North Carolina; died 8 Mar 1837, Warren Co KY. He married Elizabeth Ann Williams, 23 Nov 1791, Richmond Co NC; she was the daughter of Edward williams and rebecca Houstess. They are buried Old Zion Heritage Way Baptist church cemetery, Woodburn, Warren Co, KY. A son of Eli and Elizabeth is said to have been:

Thomas Hill Blewett, born 23 Oct 1792, Richmond Co NC, died 8 May 1881, Warren Co KY. He married Susanna Harris 12 Jul 1817, Logan Co KY. She was the daughter of Christopher Harris and Elizabeth Grubbs, born 13 Feb 1798 in Madison Co KY, died 22 Jan 1885, Warren Co KY.
Thomas did leave a will, proved May court 1848. Susannah his wife to be Executrix. Named only three daughter as above. The censuses show more children.
1850 Census:
Susanna Blewett, age 52
Thomas 22; Susanna 18; Sarah 16; Margaret 14; Hensley 12; Nancy 10.
also Susan A. 21, and Elizabeth age 6 months - quite possilby Thomas's wife and child.
