Hannah Hudnall

(Abt 1769 - Bef 22 Sep 1842)

Hannah was George Courts' 3rd wife. She was the third of the eight daughters of John Hudnall and Jemima Jennings.

John Hudnall was born ca 1743 in Prince William Co VA an d. 1815, Caswell Co, NC. He was a son of Mary Withers [b. 1711, Stafford Co VA, d. 1783] and Joseph Hudnall [b. Northumberland Co VA, d. 1788 Fauquier Co VA]. John Hudnall's grandparents were Elizabeth Keene and James Withers - James Withers will of 1 Jun 1746, probate 8 Jul 1745, named his son-in-law Joseph Hudnall. Elizabeth Keene's father was Matthew Keene whose will of 21 Jul 1723, probate 14 Apr 1731, named his son-in-law as James Withers.

Joseph Hudnall, was a church Warden, Dittigen Parish, Prince William Co and on the Roster of Capt William Edmond's Troops, French & Indian War, 1761. He also furnished supplies during the Revolution. He gave a deed of Gift, Sep 1765 in Fauquier Co VA to his son John Hudnall, plantation on which lives, 250 acres, tract to Joseph Hudnall from John Hudnall, deceased of Northumberland Co VA, grandfather of said John Hudnall.

John and Jemima sold the land in Fauquier on 28 Mar 1778 to Charles Morehead and again mentioned that the land had come from his grandfather.

John Hudnall also served in the French & Indian War in 1761 in the same unit as his father. He was paid for supplies furnished during the Revolution. Between 1778 and early 1779, John moved across the Rappahannock to Culpeper Co VA where he lived until they moved to North Carolina. He appears in the court records in Caswell Co NC in January of 1803.

Caswell Co NC DB N, p.17 24 Jan 1803 James Grant, Jr to John Hudnall for $1000. 180 acres on Wolf Island & Hogan's Creeks to include 80 acres purchased of Robert Kimbrought and 100 acres of Timothy Ruark. Adj James Powell, Rockingham Co line, Nathl Murphey.

DB Q, p.567 24 Nov 1812 Joseph Arnett to John Hudnall. $250. 206.4 acres adj James Powell, Strader, Patterson.

John also bought land across the Rockingham Co line: 6 Jul 1804, tract in Rockingham on Wolf Island Creek, 130 acres. [Rockingham DB L,p.7]

John Hudnall died in Caswell leaving his will signed 23 Jul 1814, probate Apr 1815. Among other bequests he gave his granddaughter, Elizabeth R. Courts the land he bought of Joseph Arnett.

Hannah's mother Jemima Jennings was born ca 1748 in Prince William Co VA and died before July 1814 in Caswell Co NC. Her parents were Augustine Jennings and Hannah Williams. Jemina was the 6th of 15 children. Hannah [1710-1809) is said to have been a daughter of James Williams but the loss of records in Prince William Co has made any confirmation impossible. Hannah died in Fauquier Co VA and left a will signed 14 Oct 1809 and probated Dec Court the same year. She requested that the remainder be divided between her surviving children but did not specify daughter Jemima. However, her husband Augustine's estate was not settled until after her death and one of the heirs at that time was John Hudnall who had intermarried with Jemima, daughter of deceased.

Augustine Jennings, father of Jemima Jennings, was probably born ca 1708 in Richmond Co VA. He first appears in court records of Lunenburg Parish, Richmond Co in May of 1733 when he was named as one of the Executors of his father's will. In 1741 he purchased 200 acres in Hamilton Parish, Prince William Co VA and when Fauquier Co was set off from Prince William in 1759 he became part of Fauquier. Augustine was active in the militia of both Prince William and Fauquier Counties. He was too old for Revolutionary service but his widow was paid for supplies furnished. Augustine died between the signing of his will on 13 Dec 1776 and probate 24 Aug 1778. He named all sons first according to age, and then the daughters. Daughter Jemima received what she had already rec'd and £20 - after the death of her mother, Jemima and husband John Hudnall received a share of the land on which her widowed mother had resided.

Augustine Jennings was the son of William Jennings [1667-1733, Lunenburg Parish, Richmond Co VA] and wife Mary. Her surname is unproved but traditionall Mary Willoughby. Augustine was the youngest of 5 children, named in the will of William Jennings signed 26 May 1733, probate 2 Jul 1733. Mary was living at the time of the will.

Williams Jennings was the son of John Jennings, born ca 1630-1635, d. 1669. John first appeared in Old Rappanhannock Co VA living on Pepetick Creek. The location is today in Westmoreland Co. His wife was Margaret as evidenced by a dower release dated 28 Apr 1660. He left a will proved by ordering division of lands by sons John Jr and William. It was dated 11 Feb 1669, but has not been found. The deed is dated 20 Aug 1690 and recorded Richmond Co DB 8, p.245. Traditionally John Jennings, the elder, was born in England. His wife Margaret may have been a Payne given the close assocation of the two families evidenced in the records. Margaret gave deeds of gifts to her children on 30 Apr 1670, indicating that William was a minor under the age of 12. The children were Honor, Margrett, John, William, Grace and Jane; there was possibly a grandson Phillip Wadding Jr. She married again before 1682 to an Edrington and had a son by him. [It's likely the deeds of gift were made prior to the marriage.] Margaret died in 1685, will signed 15 Feb 1682 and probate 4 Mar 1685 and named only the sons John & William Jennings, and Christopher Edrington. William was still a minor when his mother died and made choice of John Sanders for his guardian.
