(Moses Gentry) Born in Hanover Co., Va., about 1722, and lived mostly in Louisa and Albemarle. Louisa was organized from Hanover in 1742, and at that time quite a number of Gentrys had settled in Louisa Co. In 1744 the County of Albemarle was organized still further west of Louisa, but it was not until about 1760 when the Gentrys began to settle in Albemarle. Moses Gentry bought land of Samuel Gay, of Albemarle, March 13, 1778, on the old Lynchburg road, north of Garland's Store, on the south side of Ragged Mountain, and made it his permanent home. He was a Ruling Elder in the Cove Presbyterian Church, a large brick church building situated about six miles from his home. His wife, Lucy Sims, was noted for her religious zeal and church work. She lived to be nearly one hundred years of age, surviving her husband many years. After his death, which occurred in 1808, she kept an inn, or tavern, her home being suitably located on the main road from Lynchburg to Richmond.

Will: In the name of God, Amen. I Moses Gentry of Albemarle County being well in body and in Sound mind memory and Judgement and considering the uncertainty of this mortal Life do make and publish this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following, that is to say I first recommend my Soul unto the hands of Almighty God, who gave it and my body to the Earth to be buried in a Christian like manner, at the discretion of my Excecutors hereafter named and touching such worldly Estate as God hath blessed me with I do leave it in manner and form following: It is my will and Desire that my Wife Lucy Gentry have the whole of my Estate both real and personal after paying all my just Debts, which Estate she is to enjoy during her widowhood and after the death of my Wife Lucy my lands to be sold by my Ex'trs for the best price that can be had for it, and the money arising from the Sale of my Land to be equally divided among my Children except Joanah Walters, but the part that would have come to her to be equally divided among her Children. It is my Will and Desire that my Son David Gentry have Sixty pounds over and above his proportionable part for living with and taking Keer of his Mother, it is my will and desire that all my Children that hath not been furnished with a Feather bed and furniture or horse bridle and saddle and Cow & Calf, that they be furnished out of my Estate before any division takes place. It is my will and desire that my Daughter Joanah Walters have one equal part with my other Children but that part that she would have had to be put in the hands a Trustee to for her and her Children's Use and not be in the power of her husband Joseph Walters to dispose of in any Manner whatever, and lastly, I do appoint Edward Garland, Andrew Hart and James Gentry Sole Executors of this my last will and Testament hereby revoking and disallowing all former wills by me made and declare this to be my last Will and Testament. In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and Seal this 15th day of March in the year of our Lord 1806. Final settlement was not made by the administrator, Edward Garland, until 1825.

Only children David and Joannah were named in Moses's will.
