James was the son of John Winston and Alice Bickerton.

Other children of James and Sarah Marks Winston included (1) John Hastings Winston who married Damarias Aletha Campbell on 21 May 1816. They inherited Malvern Hill. (2) Alice Bickerton Winston married 19 Jun 1809 to Dr. Thomas Barbee. He was a son of William Barbee who was in the Revolution and crossed the Delaware with George Washington. (3) Peter Marks Winston said to have died unmarried.

Died at age 73 years, 4 months, 18 days. Was born either in 1752 or 1753.
