Stamps researchers show this William as a son of Theodrick Carter III of Halifax Co. Theodrick did indeed have a son William who is named in his will in July of 1805 - 1805 is also they year they claim William Carter died in Pittsylvania Co. Given the numbers of Carters in the area I believe an error has been made. Mary Stamps' brother William Stamps is also said to have married Elizabeth Carter, daughter of Theodrick III but Theodrick Carter's will shows his daughter's name to have been Elizabeth Richardson.
