Sr. George Howard

(1798 - 1863)

George Howard, a printer, native of Howard Co Maryland, Moved to Halifax, NC in 1824. He moved to Tarboro NC in 1836. His weekly newspapers in Halifax was "Free Press"; changing to "Tarboro Press" and in 1852 to "Tarboro Southerner". Today it is the "The Daily Sourtherner" and is one of the oldest newspapers in NC.
George and Alice had children besides George: Sara, Martha Louisa, John who died 4 Oct 1862 from wounds received at the Battle of Sharpsburg, Alice, Harriet, William, Margaret, and Frank.

Email from Bill Leggett, also a descendant of George A Holderness, states that researchers in the family included William Stamps Howard, son of Judge George Howard, and George Howard, a grandson of the judge who did his research in the 1950's. George Howard, printer, is said to be a son of John Howard (1772-1810) and Sara Romaine, in turn a son of Benjamin Howard (1742 - bef. 1782) Benjamin Howard's family is documented in Anne Arundel County, MD. However, Mr. Leggett has been unable to prove the links from George to John and then Benjamin.
