WILLIAM Stamps
( - 1746)
A family tradition says that the wife of William Stamps was Mary Byrd, daughter of Col. William Byrd, but this appears to be false according to other records. Byrd family records indicate that Mary was the wife of John Rogers. There were other Byrd/Bird families so that could still have been her name - one researcher found three William Byrds with a daughter named Mary.
In 1720 William Stamps was granted a license to operate a ferry over the Rappahnnock River. In the same year William and Mary his wife sold land and she relinquished her dower rights. In 1721, Francessco Frizzel, believed to be William's uncle, deeded 130 acres in the Northern Neck to William Stamps. [believed to be from Lancaster Co records - I do not have the exact source]
In 1731, William received a Grant for 1533 acres on or near Goose Creek, adjoining the 13,879 acres grant to Col. Charles Burgess of Lancaster Co [Grant Book C, p.221]. In 1731, Charles Burgess, William Stamps, Thomas Thornton and Rawleigh Chinn, hired John Barber to survey their boundary lines. A lawsuit many years later, 1811, Powell vs. Chinn, Loudoun Co Superior Court was over the accuracy of this 1731 survey. One of the witness was William Stamps of Boubon Co KY, a grandson of Thomas Stamps of Fauquier Co. [I believe this would make his a great-grandson of this man.]
After Mary died, William married again, about 1739, to Catherine Yerby, widow of John Yerby.
10 Jun 1739, Catherine Yerby Stamps filed an Inventory on the Yerby estate. Her children by John Yerby were William, John, Elizabeth, Joanna, and Sarah, wife of Nicholas Lawson. Catherine died before 12 Apr 1745, as Nicholas Lawson in right of his wife Sarah, received slaves which had belonged to Sarah's mother.
William's will is said to have recorded 9 May 1746 in Lancaster Co., Lancaster WB 14, p.105, but the will dated 15 Mar 1745 is said to be lost. Chattin Chowning, executor, filed an inventory in April of 1745 - and this must contain the data concerning the Will, Lancaster WB 14, p.105.
An inventory was also filed in Goochland Co. reflecting his ownership of property in both counties.
