Sarah Jane "Sallie" Anderson

(20 Feb 1819 - 20 Jul 1906)

PDA Lineage of Bessie Lee Copeland pub Jan 2001, Vol XX, #1 of Newsletter, gave birthplace of Sarah Jane.

1860 Dade Co MO Census, Polk Twp, p.54, Dwelling 350. Sarah, widow of Zadock is living between her son Richard and daughter Mary J who has married Robert Pullan. She is 40. Rebecca F. 15, Zadoc W. 12, Zebedee age 10 are still living at home with their mother. I did not find sons James Robert who would be about 20, nor son William "Arche", age 16.

Sarah remarried to Henry Thompson.

1870 Dade Co MO Census, South Twp, p.112b. Henry T. Thompson age 65, b. North Carolina and Sarah, age 51, b. KY.

by 1880 she was in Texas:

Several applications to the Dawes Commission, and later the Guion Miller Commission for Indian citizenship, indicated that Sarah's mother Nancy was nee Nancy Gentry and Nancy was Indian, or partly so. At least one application stated that at some time both Nancy and Sarah had been entered on the rolls. I don't believe this was ever proved. The testimony was confused and confusing and those testifying did not seem to know what tribe Nancy had been, nor could they agree on residences.

William Arche Poindexter's failed application to the Eastern Cherokee Rolls, Case #7282, states that his mother's parents were William and Nancy Anderson. He stated that they were born in North Carolina and Nancy was living in Kentucky in 1851. The children of William and Nancy were listed as:
Elias Anderson, killed in the Black Hawk War [an Eli D.[no Elias] Anderson is on the enrollment list of the Black Hawk War on the Illinois state site. He served in J. Bowman's Company, Spies Regt, 1st Brigade; enrolled Jefferson Co. I have no idea if this can be the same person.]
John, dead, date not known
Bettie, living last account in Illinois
Sallie, died 20 Jul 1906
Two children, twins
William, died about 1854

Online databases seem to indicate it's much more likely that Sarah Jane Anderson's mother Nancy Gentry was the daughter of a Samuel Gentry of Surry Co NC. Samuel was married at least twice and it has not been proved which lady, Ann Brooks, or Sarah Brock, was the mother of which of his children. Either way, both wives appear to have families living in Surry Co. There does not seem to be an "Indian blood" in this family line, anymore than there was in the Poindexter family.
