John E. Avery, 87, of Honey Grove died Wednesday, July 2, 1997, at Honey Grove Nursing Center.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 4 at Cooper-Sorrells Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Lance Clemmons and the Rev. Greg Faulls officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
He was born Sept. 1, 1909, in the Dial community south of Honey Grove to John Richard and Niece Alice Anderson Avery.
He married Pauline Wishard, in Honey Grove.
He attended school at Dial and drove the Honey Grove school bus for seven years. It was known as Johnny's Bus. He was a sergeant in the U.S. Air Force during World War II in the 865th Squadron of the 494th Bomb Group. He was an elder at Dial Presbyterian Church. He served as Fannin County commissioner for Precinct 3 from 1947-52 and from 1961-76. He was a member of the Texas Historical Commission for 20 years and vice president of the Oakwood Cemetery Association, vice president of Northeast Texas Resources Conservation and Development, a member of North Texas Tuberculosis Association, the Honey Grove Chamber of Commerce, American Heart Association, Fannin County Friends of Sam Rayburn Library and Friends of Bertha Voyer Memorial Library.
Surviving are his wife; a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Alice and Steve Glover of Paris; two granddaughters, Allison and Amanda Glover; a sister, Lena Smith of Paris; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Gerald and Peggy Wishard of Dial; a sister-in-law, Grace Avery of Honey Grove; and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Bill Thurman, Charles Yarbrough, Ricky Snell, Rodger Joyce, Gerald Wishard, Wayne Clement, Sonny Stanley and Robert A. Shelton Jr.
