Sarah was the daughter of Joseph Bradley of Charles City Co.
Son Devereux stated he was about 12 or 13 when his mother died and his education ended. He then lived with his eldest brother, Robert, and was employed in exercising race horses, taking care of gamecocks and in plowing and other plantation work. At 17, he tried the carpenter business with brother Joseph who often had hard words and severe blows for Devereux.
