Obituary from unknown newspaper, but likely in Tulsa, OK
TU fan Ben Mills dead at 85
The Tulsa University Golden Hurricane lost one of its most loyal fans Sunday when Ben F. Mills, 85, died in a Tulsa hospital.
This academic year will be the first in a quarter century in which Mills won't be in the stand cheering for his favorite team.
A former educator and basketball coach, he and his wife, Edith, rarely missed a home football or basketball game, even when the team's prospects were bleak.
Sports became a favorite pastime of the couple when they were country school teachers 60 years ago. In Gore, Mills coached the boys' basketball team and his wife was the girls' coach.
But the Golden Hurricane was special to them because they said Tulsa was their home. They often urged other Tulsans to help the teams with moral support.
Mills, a native of Uniontown, Ark., was a graduate of Northeastern State University in Tahlequah. He started teaching in 1918 in Sequoyah County and later taught in Cherokee, Creek and Tulsa counties.
He and Mrs. Mills were married 66 years ago. Both taught in Tahlequah and Gypsy. Mills was a former superintendent of Gore schools.
They came to Tulsa in 1943 when Mills worked with the Air Force. He retired from Pan American Oil Co., now Amoco, in 1958 and taught five years at East Central Junior High.
He coached little league baseball and basketball teams and was an avid fisherman. His pastimes also included a backyard garden he started in 1943 at their home at 2424 E. Third St.
He was a member and former deacon of the First Christian Church of Tulsa.
Funeral services were scheduled at 2:30 this afternoon in the First Christian Church chapel. Burial will be in Memorial Park Mausoleum with Moore's Eastlawn Funeral Home in charge.
Also surviving are a son, Joe F. Mills of Tulsa; a daughter Ione Stauss of Tahlequah; a brother Dr. Richard C. Mills of Oklahoma City; two sisters, Cora Inman of Tahlequah and Minnie DeLong of Chula Vista, Calif; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Friends are contributing to the Memorial Fund of First Christian Church.
