Eugene William Redmond

(7 Dec 1895 - 23 Dec 1943)

I believe this is Eugene in the 1910 Census, Fort Smith, Ward 7, Sebastian Co, AR, Hh 31, but I cannot completely explain the family. Perhaps Charles and Cora have very recently married and this is a blended family. She does say she has 5 living children and there are 5 Redmond children. But there are also five Rupport children. The census is extremely difficult to read - the handwriting is very bad and the film blurred. Perhaps the Redmonds are foster children - because Cora also seems a bit young to have Eugene.
Chas. Rappart/Rupport, age 3?, married once [years unreadable], b. Illinois, House painter
Cora, wife, age 30, has had 6 children - 5 are living, b,. IL
Fern, dau, 1 year, 3 months, b. IL
Harold, son, age 10, b. IL
Thelma, dau, age 7, b. IL
Florence, son, age 5, b. IL
Bernette, dau, age 2, b. IL
All of the above dittoed for the Rupport last name; the rest are all Redmonds. I even wondered if the parents were simply left off the following:
Eugene Redmond, son, age 14, b. Ohio
Margaret & Marian, daughters, both age 11, b. Ohio
Wallace?? son, age 7, b. Arkansas
Helen, dau, age 3, b. AR
Loretta, dau, age 1, b. AR

US Army Transport Service Passenger Lists. Mongolia from Brest, France on 12 Dec 1918..
Eugene Redmond, pvt. Nearest Relative: Mrs. Mary Redmond, 818 S. 20th St, Ft. Smith, AR, Mother.
US Veterans Admin Master Index shows that he enlisted at Guthrie, OK and discharged on 11 Jan 1919

Going back to 1900, is only somewhat more confusing, although I did find a Eugene Redmond of the right age living in Miami, Clermont Co, Ohio; Hh 47
Michael Redmond, b. Apr 1862, age 39, married 9 years, b. Ohio, parents b. Ireland, Railroad laborer
Mary [not Cora???], b. Jul 1865, age 34, six children - five living. Born Ohio, parents born Ireland.
Julia, dau, b. Oct 1892, age 7, b. Kansas
Mary, dau, b. Oct 1894, age 5, b. Ohio as are all the rest of the children
Eugene, son, b. Dec 1895, age 4
Margaret and Marion, daughter, b. Aug 1898, age 1
Mary Wallace, mother-in-law, b. Dec 1828, age 71 - claims one child, b. Ireland as were her parents.

After finding the 1900, census, I looked again in 1920 in Sebastian Co and found Michael and Mary Redmond, living in Upper Township, Hh 70:
M. F. Redmond, age 57, b. Ohio, parents b. Ireland; Conductor, Railway
Mary, wife, age 54 b. Ohio, parents b. Ireland
Marion, daughter age 21, b. Ohio [one of the twins]
Helen, dau, age 12, b. Arkansas
Loretta, dau, age 11, b. Arkansas

Eugene and Kathryn were living apart in 1930. I did find E. W. Redmond living as a lodger in Okmulgee, OK, age 34, born in Ohio. Worked on the railroad, but was marked as married. Kathryn Redmond was living in Fort Smith with her parents and claimed to be a "widow".

Eugene William Redmond of 5021 Elm St was age 46, b. 7 Dec 1895 in Urbana, Ohio. Morine Redmond would always know his address. His employer was Capt. Jenkins at the Post Exchange, Camp Chaffee, Fort Smith, Sebastian Co, AR. 5'7", 145 lb. Blue eyes, black hair.

Buried Fort Smith National Cemetery, Sebastian Co, AR. Pvt. 1 CL., US Army. [World War I]. Family tradition is that he died in an auto accident. I did find a Eugene W. Redmond in the Louisiana Death Index - died in Claiborne Parish, 23 Dec 1943. The index does not give an age or residence. That Parish is on the Arkansas border and U.S. Highway 79 goes through the center of the Parish, in the north-south direction. Likely this is where Eugene died.
Ancestry posted cards - Interment Control Forms, 1928-1962. Eugene W. Redmond enlisted 19 May 1917 and was discharged 11 Jan 1919. Leaves surviving widow. He served as a PFC, Battery 3, 138th Regt. He died 23 Dec 1943 and was buried on the 28th. A Latin Cross was to be on the headstone.
