Lucille India Whitsett Jarmon, a longtime resident of the Redlands area, died of congestive heart failure Sept. 11 in Loma Linda. She was 95.
She was born Aug. 11, 1912, in the McKey community west of Sallisaw, Okla., to William Foreman Whitsett Sr. and Ida Ella Brown. She was of Scotch-Irish and Native American ancestry and was a member of the Cherokee tribe.
She married Nolan Warren Jarmon on Oct. 2, 1933, in Frederick, Okla., and they came to Redlands in the mid-1930s, following the "Dust Bowl" storms in Oklahoma. She lived in Redlands for the rest of her life, except for a brief stay in Colorado and Washington state.
During World War II, she worked as a riveter at Norton Air Force Base in San Bernardino.
In her later years she volunteered as a "pink lady" at Loma Linda University Medical Center.
Her hobbies were reading, embroidery and cooking from scratch. She also enjoyed playing Parcheesi with her siblings on weekends and watching Lawrence Welk, George Putnam and her favorite soap operas, "All My Children" and "Days of Our Lives." She also loved to travel. She took a trip to British Columbia in 1990 and her favorite trip was to Hawaii in 1997, when she was 85.
Her husband died in 1988.
Her sister Lillian Woods died in 1957, sister Gladys Mae Woods Boettger in 1977, sister Mary Frances White Bruegger in 1987, sister Eva Stephens Dickson in 1987, sister June Marie Stringer in 1994, brother William Foreman Whitsett Jr. in 1933, brother Woodrow Wilson Whitsett in 1983, brother Timothy Kelly Whitsett in 2001, brother Billy B. Whitsett in 1996, brother Joseph Edmund Whitsett in 2006 and brother Roy Donald Whitsett in 1977.
Survivors include two daughters, Dixie Dianne Jarmon Peterson and husband Brent of Iowa Park, Texas, and Linda Kay Jarmon Stearns Matney and husband Raymond Douglas of Redlands; grandchildren Michael Peterson of Guam, Steven Peterson of Las Vegas, Raymond Trevor Matney and wife Kristy of Springfield, Ill., Dawn Michelle Ford Smith and husband Dan of Highland, N.Y., and Jennifer Christiane Slaughter and husband Wesley of Redlands; and great-grandchildren Michael Peterson, Dinalee Peterson, Josh Leonida, Jonathon Ford, Patrick and Shelby Smith, Coltan Matney and Grayson and Olson Slaughter.
Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19, at Cortner Chapel, 221 Brookside Ave., Redlands. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m.
Thursday, Sept. 20, at Hillside Memorial Park, 1540 Alessandro Road, Redlands.
