Individual Details

Nancy Jane Lattimore

(1841 - 23 Aug 1887)

Said to have been Cherokee and had the alternate surname, Walkingstick.

There seems to be no question she was Cherokee. William Edmund Whitsitt has an application, 10 Aug 1900, in the Dawes Packets on Fold3. He described both marriages and stated that Nancy had been enlisted on the earlier rolls. He was also applying for his son, Foreman, who he said had also been previously enrolled. William claimed he had been adopted into the Cherokee Nation through his first wife, Nancy, nee Lattimore, Blackburn.
The commission agreed he had been adopted into the Cherokee tribe 7 Sep 1896, but there were some objections and they would delay their decision (probably related to the fact he was no longer married to a Cherokee)
The boy, Foreman, was enrolled in 1880, and had lived in the Cherokee Nation all his life and would be enrolled as a Cherokee by Blood.
Order: Whitsett died 5 Apr 1901, the application was dismissed.
