Elijah Holtzclaw

(24 Aug 1793 - 19 May 1876)

Omitted from the Bible record transcript online, but named as a son in his father's will.

He may have served in the war of 1812 - if so, by the time his widow applied for his pension, no service could be identified.
Rejected pension application for Elizabeth Holtzclaw of Salem, Lee Co, Alabama. #44085.
18 Jan 1886 - original application. Elizabeth Holtzclaw was aged 86, resident of Salem, Lee Co, AL, widow of Elijah Holtzclaw. He served with Lt. Walter Brockman's Co, commanded by Col. Jenkins. Notes that he was taken sick at Fort Hankin and hired a substitute.
17 Feb 1886. Elizabeth had Stated Elijah Holtzclaw served under Lt. Walter Brockman, Col. Jenkins. He died 19 May 1876. Pension rejected - Walter Brockman was a 1st Sgt in Captian John Myrick's Co, Col. Jenkins Regt. No Elijah Holtzclaw on the rolls.
30 Apr 1886. Letter received in Pension Office from M. M. Holtzclaw (I believe this is Mattie, her daughter). His mother remembers the man of the man his father hired as substitute as Terry Reynolds from Wilkes Co, GA. She says the name as if it was spelled Runnels. She would like to see the roll as she believes she would remember many of the men. She is not certain that he served under Brockman, but knows that she had a brother-in-law, named James Bledsoe and thinks Father was in the same company. Mother is so old, 85, that she can't remember but little.
18 Jun 1886. Letter requesting that Capt Little's Company of GA Militia, War of 1812 be examined for service of Elijah Holtzclaw
28 Jun 1886. Letter requesting whether Elijah Holtzclaw is on the rolls of Capt Runnels Co of GA Volunteers, Seminol War of 1818. If not found, please examine rolls of Capt Vesey's Company, same militia and war.
1 Jul 1886. The name of Elijah Holtzclaw is on the Co. Roll of Capt. John E. Little's Co. of Lt. Col. Saml Groves, 1st Regt, GA Militia from Aug 26, 1813 with the remark "absent without leave".
28 Sept 1886. Second Letter requesting whether Elijah Holtzclaw's name is on the rolls of Capt Terry Runnels Company, GA Militia, Seminole War, 1818. No reply had been received from 1st letter.
5 Oct 1886 The name of Elijah Holtzclaw is not on the rolls of Captain Terry Runnel's & Abner Veasey's companys in the Seminole War of 1818.
2 Mar 1887. From Salem, Lee Co, AL. Response to letter of Oct 22, 1886. Sickness & absence from home had prevented an earlier response. Walter Brockman was killed by Indians at the Colybeate Swamps in Georgia. He was acting as Capt of an Ala. Co. at the time of his death. I don't know why, but I do know that Runnels served as my subnad's substitute. I do not know when or where Runnels died, or if he is dead. I have often heard my husband speak of John E. Tittle, also. My husband did apply for Bounty Land and got the plots or grants & kept them up to his death. I think, but am not certain, he lived in Wilkes Co, GA at the time he applied. The land was in Steward & Appleton Counties, GA, but the papers were all destroyed and I cannot remember the number of the warrant. There was a thousand acres of the land. If there is any chance I can get it again, or the Warrant, I will pay whatever is right. I know that land was at most worthless in Georgia 25 years ago. Signed: Mrs. Elizabeth Holtzclaw. [NOTE: I doubt she wrote this letter - an undated, earlier note by W. M. Adams, JP stated that "Elizabeth Holtzclaw authorised Miss Mattie Holtzclaw, her daughter, to write her name properly to these papers". Adams was the JP that took her original deposition. She had appeared before him as she was unable to physically travel from her home to Opelika, the County Seat.]
12 Apr 1887. Terry Runnels is on the rolls of Capt Little's Company as 4th Corporal, from Aug 26, 1813, to Jan 30, 1814. Discharged Jany. 30th, 1814, at Fort Mitchell. No evidence that he served as a substitute.
