Anthony Haden

(Ca 1773 - Abt 1819)

Which Anthony Haden? Not the following two...
The date and location would seem to preclude Anthony, son of John & Jean Moseley who has many records in Campbell Co at this time - who was this the Anthony who appears in in Cape Girardeau, LA Territory in 1805 - could he be the Anthony D. Haden who was in Charlotte Co in 1790 and in Pittsylvania Co by 1807 - seems unlikely given when he first appears in Cape Girardeau, later Arkansas County?

Or was he the Anthony of Botetourt, son of an Isaiah Haden whose records disappear in Virginia the year prior to his arrival in Cape Girardeau? This Anthony signed his documents in Virginia and Missouri/Arkansas as A. Haden, consistently - the ONLY Anthony Haden to do so. I believe this is the correct family for this Anthony!

Some databases suggest Anthony died because his record in Botetort Co ceased about 1801. However, he must be this Anthony and explains his disappearance from Botetourt County:
In 1839, Roanoke County was form out of Botetourt. I found the following: "September 8, 1803, to Anthony Haden, Lots 15 and 35, and also two lots not numbered, Lots 15 and 35 and now owned by Mrs. M. Anthony Haden in Cape Girardeau District, Territory of Louisiana (now Missouri) by 1803 (about the time of the LA Purchase). Lots of references to him in land, court records. Laid out the town of Cape Girardeau; assaulted the clerk of the court and went to trial; sued various people; wrote rules concerning the early court; had power of attorney/agent for
several people; provided bond for many people; seems to have been a lawyer.
He married Agness Ballew, daughter of Thomas and Sarah (?) Ballew on September 24, 1805. Agnes would have been 19 according to ages given by her mother when her father died.
There are records for Anthony and Major Anthony Haden in Cape. He could have been a Major in the local militia but if he had served in the Revolutionary War he would have been a lot older than Agnes.
Goodspeed History of Southeast Missouri states that he came from Ireland - not likely!
On May 15, 1809 he gave his power of attorney to John Scott of St. Louis and George Harbison to "collect money, take title to property, transact business in Cape Girardeau. He also gave Robert Hall "Cataloula Parish" a POA to "settle all affairs" in Territory of Louisiana and Territory of Illinois (St. Louis area). This is probably when he went either to New Madrid
District or but probably farther down in Arkansas. New Madrid included a strip across what is now Arkansas.
1814 Arkansas Territory Tax included Anthony Haden; Haden & Henderson; Haden & Scott. These were probably trading companies dealing with Indians and fur traders as he had also had a close relationship to Water & Hall (Robert) who
were doing the same thing in Cape Girardeau.
He died after 1817 and some of Arkansas records show that his widow, Agnes, was living in Hempstead. She married Henry Cassidy on June 17, 1819 in Hempstead where her sister, Sinai (my 4th gr grandmother) was living.
Her probate in Ouachita Parish in 1825 stated that her children were Emily Melville Haden; Sina Narcissa Haden; Sarah Hall Haden; Thomas Ballew Haden; Anthony Louis Haden and Mary Eliza Cassidy.
Emily married Joseph Friend and they are in the Smith Co., Texas 1850 census. She is 40. Sina married Edwin Friend probably died before 1835.
No info on Sarah;
Thomas Ballew Haden was apprenticed to learn printing trade
in 1825;
Anthony Louis Haden was buying and selling land in 1837;
no
information on Mary Eliza Cassidy who would have been born between 1820 and 1822.
At one time I found an Anthony Overton Haden in Texas but descents said that they had no connection. BUT Overton surname is in prominent name in Ouachita Parish and there were connections to the Ballew, Hall, Tennille families. I feel that there is a connection.
