Alton was the son of James "Jim" and Mattie Montgomery of Claunch, NM. Alton married Mary Alice Bartlett. He was predeceased by son Robert Allen Montgomery who was killed in Vietnam.
[Died]On 20 Mar 1941, Alton L. Montgomery (B: 1919, Kansas, resident of Socorro County, New Mexico; enlisted as a Private in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He was described as single, 5 feet 10 inches, 175 pounds, and a farm hand. On 8 Dec 1941, Alton was serving with the Coast Artillery Corps in the Philippines when Imperial Japanese began their invasion. On 9 Apr 1942, he was among American and Filipino forces on the Bataan Peninsula when they were compelled to surrender. He became a POW and survived the Bataan Death March that followed. He was liberated from Fukuoka POW Camp #1, Kashii (Pine Tree Camp), Kyushu Island, Japan; where he was used as slave labor. He was discharged on 19 May 1946.
