Twenty-Seven Years
Death Came Suddenly After Stroke of Apoplexy Saturday Evening - Was Principal of Fayette Publis School - A Friend's Tribute.
Charles E. F. Allen, principal of the Fayette public school, and one of the oldest teachers in point of service in the county, died quite suddenly at his home in this city Saturday evening, in his 57th year.
Mr. Allen came over from Fayette at noon Saturday, accompanied by his daughters, Miss Minnie, who had spent Thanksgiving there with her father, guests of school patrons. The stopped at THE PATRIOT office on their way home and Mr. Allen seemed to be in his usual health. During the afternoon he was engaged in some repair work at the house occupied by Will Clark, which he owned. About 4 o'clock he was taken with a fit of dizziness, and Mrs. Allen and her daughter, being notified, went over and assisted him home. When they reached the house, Mr. Allen's right side seemed paralyzed and he was scarcely able to speak. A physician was called and expressed the belief that that the stroke would not be serious. Mr. Allen did not rally, however, and passed away at about 6:30 pm.
....Charles Edward Francis Allen was born in Polk County, Ark., Feb. 7, 1849. He went to Missouri in 1873, remaining there two years and coming to this county in 1875.
He was married Dec. 29, 1879, to Miss Lena Josephine Vandersand. They resided in Woodville town for a number of years, and Mr. Allen taught various schools in that part of the county. About 1889, he built a residence in the southwest part of this city, which the family have since occupied.
...Besides his wife and daughter, he leaves four brothers and three sisters. The brothers are Clay and Nathaniel of Arkansas, Porter of Indiana Territory, and Clinton of Kansas. The sisters live in Arkansas.
Sheriff R. L. Williams and wife of Hot Springs, Ark., the latter a sister of Mr. Allen, arrived Monday evening.
