John Elijah McCotter

My g.g.grandfather was Joseph McCotter Sr. who owned a large plantation o n a c r eek (Swift's?) near the Neuse river in what at the time was Crave n Co u nty. It became Pamlico County in the 1870's. His second wife was M ary F r ank(Frances)Caraway who died on the plantation in 1874 of Typhoid F ev e r. Joseph McCotter Sr. died a few years later in the village of Paml i c o as the plantation had subsequently burned. Joseph had two children b y h i s first marriage, Joseph Jr. and a daughter,Priscilla, who died unm ar r ied at the age of 16. Joseph Sr. and Mary had four children, my g.gr a n dmother, Sarah Elizabeth (Betty) McCotter born 7-4-1856, married John W i l liam Sanders, Wiley Green McCotter, born May 25, 1858, died June 22, 1 8 9 3 never married, Charles born l862, married ?Geanie Caroon, died Jack s o nville, FL in 1920 and John (Eliga?) McCotter, born 8-24,1870, marrie d G e rtrude (?Mills), moved to Baltimore, MD where he lived in 1931 at 5 02 N . Rose St. Joseph McCotter Sr. was 2 yrs. shy of being too old to fight i n t he Civ il War, but due to ill health his 16 year old son, Joseph Jr. w a s allow ed to serve in his stead for two years. Joseph Jr. served his f a ther's 2 y ears and then his own years. My greatgrandmother, Sarah Eli z abeth McCotter(Betty)cared for her young b rother, John after the deat h o f her mother and when her father died, Sa rah and John went to live w i th a first cousin, Robert Whorton (who marr ied Anne Bryan Silverthorn e ). Betty served as a tutor for the Whorton c hildren until her marriag e t o John William Sanders in 1886.
