Individual Details

William Joseph "Billy Joe" Adkins Jr.

(8 Nov 1817 - )

While as teens, William Joseph "Billy Joe" Adkins, Jr., Jefferson Bachus Bowen, and Edmund Fergusson followed an Irish peddeler on a road through Wayne at night. They robbed and killed him and a Davis woman found the body the next day when her horse threw her to the ground. Apparently, she was bought off and sent out "west". The incident never implicated the three men. However forty years later, while on his supposed deathbed, Edmund confessed his role and fingered his companions. When word got to Jeff Bowen he went behind the family log house and slit his throat with a straight razor. Edmund lived but Billy Joe moved to Kentucky for a brief stay. Jeff Bowen's obituary stated he committed suicide because of money problems.
