James Shelley, one of the early pioneers of the Gothenburg community, passed away Saturday at Boulder, Colo. He would have reached his 92nd birthday anniversary on February 5th. James Henry Shelley was born at Fairfield, Iowa, on February 5, 1848, as passed away at Boulder, Colo., December 30, 1939. He was married on October 9th, 1873, to Miss Mary Mickens of Danville, Ill. To this union 7 children were born, four boys and three girls. One daughter preceded him in death in 1900.

He came to Nebraska in March 1881, and homesteaded 7 1/2 miles northeast of Gothenburg. He made his home near and around Gothenburg for the rest of his life. Those left to mourn his passing are his daughters, Mrs. A. A. McKim and Mrs. R. F. Weathers of Gothenburg; and his sons John Shelly of Lafayette, Colo., Virgil Shelley of Indio, Calif., David Shelley of Gothenburg, Neb., and Ben Shelley of Boulder, Colo. He is also survived by 26 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Tuesday from the Methodist church, conducted by Rev. E. H. Maynard, the church pastor. Pallbearers were: Wayne Hurd, Jim Weathers, Lowell McKim, Ernest Cook, Albert Strien and Russell Shelley. Interment was in Grandview cemetery.
