Verna Marie Seward

The Hawk Eye, Burlington, Iowa, Saturday, May 2, 2009: Verna Marie Seward South, 85, of Chesterfield, Mo., died Friday, May 1, 2009, at St. Andrews Hospice in Chesterfield after suffering a stroke. Born Nov. 14, 1923, in Revere, Mo., she was the daughter of Lloyd and Marie Seward. On Sept. 10, 1944, she married Richard N. South. Mrs. South was head bookkeeper for a number of years at two businesses she and her husband operated: Seward Lumber Co. in Revere and Kahoka Lumber Co. in Kahoka, Mo.
She and her husband grew up together as students at Revere School. She graduated from Revere High School in 1941, and later attended Culver Stockton College in Canton, Mo., where she majored in accounting. She taught a Sunday school class for younger children at the Revere Community Church for several years and also was active in the Youth Fellowship program. In retirement, she and her husband traveled each winter in their motor home to South Padre Island, Texas, where they lived from November to March, enjoying the mild Texas winter. In 2006, they moved from Revere to Chesterfield to live in the home next to their son, Michael.
Survivors include her husband of Chesterfield; one son, Michael South of Chesterfield; one daughter, Janet Fuller of Los Gatos, Calif.; four grandchildren; one great-grandson; and other relatives.
Visitation with the family will be from 9 to 10 a.m. Monday at Wilson Funeral Home in Kahoka. The funeral for Mrs. South will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Wilson Funeral Home in Kahoka. Burial will follow in Revere Cemetery. Memorials have been established for the Revere Community Center and Revere Fire Department.
