Corona, July 22--Known throughout the postal world of this country as "Daddy Jewell of the Rural Route Service, " and a leader in state and national organizations of this branch of the post office department, Phillip S. Jewell, 68 years of age, passed away Saturday after a short illness, at Nightingale camp in the San Jacinto mountains. He and Mrs. Jewell were spending their second summer there. His death is mourned by many friends throughout the state and nation. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church South, at Downey, this afternoon, with interment at the Downey cemetery. He formerly resided there for many years, moving to Corona after his retirement from the postal service and in late years doing much traveling to visit among his children. First Rural Leader. He was among the first, if not the first, president of California association of rural mail carriers and attended many of the national conventions. He was president of the Los Angeles county association for many years. He services as rural route carrier out of Downey from 1909 until his retiement in 1932. During this busy life he made and held many friendships, especially among the patrons on his rural route. Mr. Jewell was born in Mercer, Penn., on June 11, 1867. He came to California and located at Wilmington, in 1887, and on July 9, 1891 was married to Miss Ann Kirkpatrick. They resided at or near Downey since 1895. Besides his wife, Mr. Jewell is survived by sons, including Eldon M., of Coachella, Day of Corona, Thomas E., of Coachella and daughters including Mrs. Ethel Weatherbee of Goleta, Mrs. Ada Jewell of Coachella, Mrs. Ivy Finch of Gardena; 12 grand children and three great-grand children. He joined the Methodist church when a lad of 14 years, and had been a faithful member, holding many positions of responsibility. In his work as rural mail carrier and in the associations representing that branch of the postal service, he was known throughout the nation as "Daddy" Jewell held in the highest esteem and beloved by many friends.
