Susannah Amelia Kirkpatrick

Susannah (or Susan) Kirkpatrick was born on 12 February 1843 and died at Camp Point, Illinois 15 May 1911. She married Samuel Layton (Lay) Clarke who was born 1832 and died 4 January 1895.
There were four (4) children born of the marriage.

Mrs. Susan Clark, born in Ellington Township, February 12, 1843, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. P. C. Folckner [Folckemer], at Camp Point, yesterday morning at 11 o'clock. Mrs. Clarke spent the greater part of her life in Camp Point and was one of its most highly respected residents. She was united in marriage to S. L. Clarke in 1861 and five children were born to that union, two of whom died in infancy. Her husband preceded her in death several years, his demise having occurred January 3, 1895. Heart trouble and complication of ailments terminated in her death, her health having been impaired nearly three years. She was a member of the Camp Point M. E. church and was affiliated with that denomination several years, having joined the church in her girlhood. She was numbered among the oldest members. To survive her she leaves two sons, James Clarke, of Sioux Falls, S. D., and Harry S. Clarke, of Fairbault, N. D., and one daughter, Mrs. P. C. Folckner of Camp Point, at whose home her death occurred. She also leaves three grandchildren, James and Fred Clarke and Dorothy Folckner. The funeral will be held Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock from the Camp Point M. E. church.

Camp Point, Ill., May 16---Death claimed a pioneer woman of this community yesterday in the person of Mrs. Susan Clarke, widow of Samuel Lathrop Clarke, a well known traveling salesman, who died several years ago. Mrs. Clarke had been an invalid for a number of years past and for many months had been confined to her bed, suffering of a complications of diseases, to which the tired and worn out body finally yielded, releasing the brave spirit which welcomed gladly the eternal rest. Mrs. Clarke was in the 68th year of her age, and was the daughter of the Rev. and Mrs. Augustus Kirkpatrick, the former a widely known Methodist minister of the early days and man prominently identified with the early history of Camp Point. She was married forty-nine years ago to Samuel Lathrop Clarke, who was for a number of the years in business in Camp Point, later going on the road as traveling salesman for the Bradley & Metcalf shoe firm of Milwaukee, the company of which his two sons, James and Harry, are now representatives. Their homes are in Watertown, S. D. Besides the sons, there is one daughter, Mrs. Philip C. Folckemer, who was her mother's constant and devoted attendant during all of the years of her illness. There are two grandchildren, Dorothy Folckemer and James Clarke, Jr. Mrs. Clarke also was a foster mother to her orphaned niece, Mrs. R. M. Kimber of Galesburg, who passed away last winter. There are a number of relatives in Carthage and other cities, and the funeral services will be delayed pending their arrival. Burial will be made in the family lot in Evergreen cemetery. Mrs. Clarke was a lifelong and consistent member of the Methodist church, but found her greatest pleasure in her home life, in ministering to the comfort of husband and children. She was an ideal wife, and mother, and her gracious personality will be sadly missed in her home circle, and among the little group of chose friends who were privileged to know her well.
