Augustus Browning Kirkpatrick
(4 Dec 1800 - 25 Mar 1879)
This oldest son of John Kirkpatrick was born in Jackson County, Georgia 4 December 1800, moved with his parents to Madison Co., Illinois in 1802, and died in Adams Co., Illinois, 25 March 1879. He married on 22 May 1822 to Mary Elizabeth Smith who was born in Kentucky, 22 March 1802 and died 16 August 1861 at Camp Point, Illinois. Elizabeth was the the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth (Peter) Smith. Thomas Smith was born in 1769 in Virginia, moved to Washington County, Kentucky, thence to Madison Co., Illinois, in 1819, and Sangamon County, Illinois in February 1822. Thomas's wife Elizabeth was born in 1772. Mary Elizabeth was mother of all of Augustus' children.
After Elizabeth's death, Augustus married a second time on 1 October 1863 at Stark County, Illinois (see Sec II Chap 17 FTM CD#2), to the widow of James Redding, Fanny Redding. Fanny died aged 55, on 18 September 1870. We do not have her maiden name
After Fanny's death, Augustus married 24 November 1875, in McDonough County, Illinois, Lydia Ann (Brooks) Comer. Lydia Ann was born in New York State, 12 July 1824 and died at her home in Camp Point, Illinois, 18 April 1894. She came to Illinois with her family and lived in Will County, where she married Caleb Comer and had four children. She married Augustus Kirkpatrick in 1875 after her husband's death. One daughter from the first marriage survived Lydia. This was Nancy, Mrs. Leonard A. (Comer) Sells.
Part of an obituary of A. B. Kirkpatrick, states:
"Rev. Augustus B. Kirkpatrick, son of Rev. John and Sarah Kirkpatrick was born Dec. 4, 1800 and died at his residence in Camp Point, Ill., March 25, 1879. The deceased was a native of Georgia. In 1802 his parents emigrated to this state. In 1829 he came to Adams County, which has been his permanent home. Mr. Kirkpatrick was converted and joined the M.E. [Methodist Episcopal] church in 1812 and has filled at different periods all the official positions in the Church within the gift of a lay member. August 11, 1832, he was licensed to exhort by Rev. Peter Cartwright. In 1845 he was granted license as a local preacher. At a session of the Illinois conference held 1845, he was ordained local deacon. His funeral service was attended by a large circle of friends, Revs. Bryant and Crawford delivering addresses . . . . W. A. Crawford."*
It has been said that Kirkpatrick moved in 1816 with his family from Madison County to Sangamon County, Illinois. This however is unlikely. The family moved to and lived in Bond County for some years, moving to Sangamon County sometime around 1825. Augustus is often given as one of the pioneer immigrants to Adams County, Illinois. Census reports give his occupation as farmer.
In a will filed 28 February 1879, in Adams County, Illinois, Augustus B. Kirkpatrick makes these bequests, after his just debts are paid, etc.:
"I give and bequeath to my wife Lydia Ann Kirkpatrick all my household and kitchen furniture, including the carpets, except one bed. . . . one hundred dollars in money and one cow to be received and accepted by my wife in lieu of dower in my estate and with the understanding that she release her dower interest to my son Joseph H. for the equal benefit of my four children named. . . .
"I give and devise to my four children now living to wit Sarah E. Kern, John S. Kirkpatrick, Joseph H. Kirkpatrick, and Susan A. Clarke, the sum of two hundred dollars each. . . .
"I give and devise to the three living grandchildren of my deceased son Thomas L. Kirkpatrick, the sum of two dollars each, and to my grand-daughter Emma A. Kimber, the sum of twenty-five dollars. . . ."
Augustus named his son Joseph Hunter Kirkpatrick as his executor.
