Bessie Clevenger Kirkpatrick

(Oct 1886 - 3 Jun 1907)

Posted at findagrave.com: Bessie C Clevenger was born to Clara (Lytle) and Joseph Clevenger. Bessie's mother, Clara, died during childbirth at the age of 27. Joseph was reportedly too distraught by Clara's death to care for Bessie, so he gave the baby to Clara's younger sister, Ora Anna (Lytle) and her husband, Charles Hardin Kirkpatrick, to raise. The kirkpatricks took Bessie back to Cass county, Nebraska, and raised her as their own. They did not have any other children, and reportedly doted on Bessie.

It is not known what happened to Bessie's biological father, Joseph. But according to the Telluride, Colorado census records of 1900, he resided with a business partner - their occupations listed as miners.

Bessie married William Harvey Rhoden. On May 7, 1907, she gave birth to a son, Charles William Rhoden and died shortly after the birth at age 20.

Following Bessie's death, William and the baby, Charles, went to live with William's parents. William remarried about 8 years later and moved away. He died on May 7, 1942, in Pierce county, Washington.

Charles remained with his grandparents (William A and Josephine Rhoden) until both of them passed away. Charles was 15 years old and reportedly hopped on a train and traveled around the country working for the railroads. Charles died in August, 1981, Las Vegas, Nevada.
