Individual Details

William Fletcher Mundon

(1834 - 28 Sep 1865)

William Fletcher Mundon, fourth child of Frederick And Sussannah Caroline (Kirkpatrick) Mundon, was born in Bond County, Illinois, about 1834. He died in Grant County, Wisconsin 28 September 1865. His wife was Sarah Jane Kimball, daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth Kimball. They were married 28 June 1855 at Mifflin, Grant County, Wisconsin. At the time Mundon was a farmer. W. F. Mundon is buried in the Kirkpatrick Cemetery near Rewey, Wisconsin.

On 21 August 1862 Mundon enlisted in the Union Army at Platteville, Wisconsin. He was a Private in Company A, commanded by Capt. George B. Carter, 33rd Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry. The regiment served in Louisiana and Alabama among other places and was apparently mustered out at Vicksburg, Mississippi on 1 September 1865. Mundon came home and died 27 days later on September 28 of "Congestive Chills", contracted according to his wife's pension application, in Montgomery, Alabama. She applied in 1866.

Mundon's enlistment papers describe him as standing 5 feet 10ΒΌ inches, with grey eyes, brown hair, dark complexion, well-built, and 28 years of age. He was assigned as a teamster during much of his service.

Sarah Jane (Kimball) Mundon remarried after his death to John Newman, a farmer of Washburn (now Arthur), Grant County, Wisconsin, 3 January 1868, at Dodgeville, Wisconsin. She apparently had more children by John Newman, but we do not have their names.

There were four children born to William and Sarah Jane.
