James Oliver Porter Jr.

Dr. James Oliver Porter, 55, a prominent obstetrician and gynecologist, was found dead Thursday from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in his apartment at 1421 North University Avenue, police said. The body was discovered by Porter's son, Joseph D. Porter, who lives in the same apartment building. The younger Porter had been called by his father's office and went to investigate. The body was on a bedroom floor with one bullet wound in the right side of the neck. A .38-caliber pistol lay near the body. The death was ruled suicide by Dr. John McCollough Smith, a deputy Pulaski County coroner.
Dr. Porter was a member of Grace Presbyterian Church and was a veteran of World War II. He was a graduate of the University of Arkansas Medical School and was on the staff of St. Vincent Infirmary and Baptist Medical Center. He was a member of the Pulaski County Medical Society, Arkansas State Medical Society, American Medical Association, American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Southeastern Obstetrics and Gynecology Society and the Southern Medical Association. He was a diplomate of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Arkansas School of Medicine.
Surviving are two other sons, James Robert Porter and Jon Patrick Porter, all of Little Rock; his mother, Mrs. J. O. Porter, Sr. of Clarksville; and a sister Mrs. A. N. Ragon of Clarksville. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Grace Presbyterian Church by Rev. Douglas Heidt. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at New Cemetery at Mulberry (Crawford County) by Healey & Roth. The family will be at 9 Van Lee Drive.
