James Oliver Porter, Sr., aged 76 of 1608 South Tyler street, director of the state Bureau of Vital Statistics and a former state senator, died Monday. Mr. Porter served in the Senate from 1955 to 1959, representing Franklin, Crawford and Johnson Counties. He was a former business manager at the State Hospital and formerly was affiliated with the Federal Land Banks at St. Louis. He operated a mercantile business at Mulberry (Crawford County). He was born at Clarksville and was a member of the Grace Presbyterian Church and the Scottish Rite. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Hilda Hamm Porter; a son, Dr. J. O. Porter Jr. of Little Rock; a daughter, Mrs. A. N. Ragon, Jr. of Clarksville; a sister, Mrs. Tom Hervey of Clarksville, and four grandchildren. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Grace Presbyterian Church by Rev. Donald K. Campbell. Pallbearers will be Dr. Lehman, D. Jackson, Collier Porter, Dr. Wallace H. Taylor, John Ross Taylor, William Taylor, Dr. William E. Jackson, James F. Taylor, Robert Taylor, Richard Taylor and Thomas Porter. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. at Mulberry Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Grace Presbyterian Church.
