Ray Elbert Walston

News Tribune, Tacoma Washington, Friday, February 20, 1970, Page 25, Col. 3: Ray E. Walston, Ex-Custodian, Taken by Death. Ray E. Walston, 75, of 1524 S. Monroe St., died Wednesday in Tacoma.

Mr. Walston, was born in Bradgate, Iowa, moved to Washington in 1901, and to Tacoma in 1923. He served with the Army during World War I and was presented the Distinguished Service cross by the late Gen. John J. Pershing. Mr. Walston, a retired custodian for Tacoma Public schools, was last employed at Sherman Elementary School.

He had been a member of Post 91, Veterans of Foreign Wars, since 1926, and was a member of American Legion Post 138 and World War I Veterans, Barracks 158.

Surviving are his wife, Edna H.; a son, Joe M., of Tacoma; two sisters, Mrs. G. P. Harris, of Woodburn, Ore., and Mrs. F. B. Wisner of Boise, Idaho; and two grandchildren.

Services are announced by the Haven of Rest Mortuary, Gig Harbor.

Awarded for actions during the World War I
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Bugler Ray E. Walston (ASN: 2258495), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company M, 361st Infantry Regiment, 91st Division, A.E.F., near Gesnes, France, September 29 to 3 October 1918. Without any thought of personal danger, Bugler Walston repeatedly carried messages over ground swept by shell and machine-gun fire, delivering his messages with the utmost promptness.
