Helena Independent, Helena, Montana, Friday, February 24, 1928, Page 10, Cols. 4 & 5: Dr. G. W. Gilham, Well Known Physician and Mason Dies of Stroke at Townsend. Townsend, Mont., Feb. 23---(special)---Doctor George W. Gilham, one of the leading physicians of central Montana, died of cerebral hemorrhage at six o'clock this evening. Doctor Gilham arose at his usual time this morning. After breakfast he went to his office and straightened things about ready for the day. About eleven o'clock he had occasion to go to his home. After visiting with Mrs. Gilham and his son Ralph for a short time, Ralph assisted his father to put on his overcoat and the doctor started for the door. He had just reached it when the fatal stroke came. Doctor Gilham was born in Josephine county Oregon, February 22, 1860. He graduated in medicine from the State University of California in 1881. He began the practice of his profession in LaGrande, Oregon, he practiced there until his removal to Montana in 1890. In politics Dr. Gilham was a republican. In 1888 he was elected to the state legislature of Oregon. On his return from the legislature he made arrangements to come to Montana.
In 1884 he married Josephine Romig. To them was born one son, Ralph, a civil and mining engineer, who makes his home in Townsend. Dr. Gilham always took an active interest in the welfare of Broadwater county and the town of Townsend. He believed both the county and the town had a great future, and he backed his judgment in both, and was always to be found actively engaged in promoting their welfare. Dr. Gilham was a prominent Mason and Odd Fellow. He was a member of Valley lodge, No. 21, A.F. & A.M., Helena Consistory, No. 3, and Algeria temple of Helena. He was a very active member of North Star lodge No. 21, I.O.O.F. Funeral arrangements will be announced on hearing from his brothers in Oregon and California.
