The Kansas City Star, Kansas City, Missouri, Wednesday, June 23, 1993: Herbert C. Clendening, 75, Tucson, Ariz., formerly of this area, died June 20, 1993, at the home. Memorial services will be at 8:30 a.m. Thursday at the Adair Chapel, Tucson; cremation. The family suggests contributions to the leukemia fund of Children's Mercy Hospital. Mr. Clendening was born in Virginia and lived in West Virginia and this area before moving to Tucson in 1982. He also lived in Phoenix before returning to Tucson in 1987. He was a consulting engineer for Howard Needles Tammen & Bergendoff for 33 years before he retired. He served in the Army for 13 years and was a lieutenant colonel; he was a veteran of World War II. He was a 1941 graduate of West Point Military Academy. He received a master's degree in engineering from the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena. He was a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers. Survivors include his wife, Dr. Pauline Kirkpatrick Pettegrew of the home; two sons, William Clendening, Olathe, and Paul Clendening, Overland Park; three daughters, Candace Clendening and Jane Clendening of Merriam and Lauren Clendening, San Angelo, Texas; two stepdaughters, June Young, Denver, and Jill O'Connor, Overland Park; a sister, Mary Bruce Clendening, Athens, Ga.; and seven grandchildren.
