John Wesley Witt

The Salt Lake Tribune, Salt Lake City, Utah, July 8, 1907, Page 2, Col. 2: John Wesley Witt, a pioneer of Wasatch county, died at his home in Heber. He was the father of nineteen children, thirteen boys and six girls, thriteen of whom are living. He has forty-two grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren.

Heber, Wasatch Co., July 8---Heber mourns the loss of another pioneer citizen in the death of John Wesley Witt. The funeral was held in the stake tabernacle last Tuesday. This is the second pioneer of 1959, who had died in the last two weeks, John Lee, aged 85 years, the first, Mr. Witt, aged 78, making the second.

Mr. Witt was the first probate judge of Wasatch county, and commander of the militia of said county in the Black Hawk war of 1866 and 1867. He was born in Illinois, 1829. He suffered in the mobbing and driving of the Saints from Far West, Mo., in 1838, also in the expulsion of saints from Nauvoo. Crossed the Mississippi river with his parents in February, 1846 and came to Utah in 1850. Moved to Provo City in 1851; built the first adobe house there in 1852; moved to Provo Valley, 1859; built the first log house in fort line in Heber. Mr. Witt was a thorough business man, a leader in all affairs of progress in the county.
