Wallace "Wallis" Kirkpatrick

Wallace (Wallis) Kirkpatrick was born on 21 April 1840 in Wayne County, Missouri. He died on 6 October 1908 in Wayne County, Missouri. About 1862 Wallace married Missouri Ann Barnhart who was born about 1832 in Missouri and died in 1870 in Missouri. Missouri was the daughter of Henry Bonaparte & Margaret (Cowan) Barnhart.

Wallace was married second in 1871 in Missouri to Eleanor Ann "Nellie" McGee, daughter of Thomas Jefferson McGee. (Records of marriages at Wayne County, Missouri were either stolen or burned by 1892.)


There were three (3) children born of the first marriage.
There were two (2) children born of the second marriage.

In the book Wayne County Missouri by Rose Fulton Cramer, 1972, page 172. In the Civil War Wallis Kirkpatrick was a private in the 31st Infantry Company H.

In the book Grand Army of the Republic, Missouri Division, Index to Death Rolls, 1882-1940, page 91, lists Kirkpatrick, Wallace / member post #354 in Center Ridge, Wayne Co., Age at death: unk. See report for 1909, pp. 26-32.

On the 1860 U. S. Census of St. Francois Township, Wayne Co., Missouri, Wallis appears with his wife Missouri A. He is a farmer. They have no children.

On the 1870 U. S. Census of St. Francois Township, Wayne Co., Missouri, Wallace appears with his wife Ann, and children James, Viola and Varona. Also in the household is Mary Ealey a servant and her son David age 2, and a 35 year old male born in Missouri whose name is hard to read but looks like Reed Barnhart. Wallace is a farmer.

Wallis Kirkpatrick appears on the 1880 St. Francois Township, Wayne Co., Missouri with his wife Ellena and children James H., Viola, Thomas W. and daughter Mary P. Estes with her daughter Edney [?]. Also in the family is Frank Kirkpatrick age 25, no relationship given.

On the 1900 U. S. Census of St. Francois Township, Wayne Co., Missouri, Wallis appears with his wife Ealonore and daughter Melina D. Wallis is a farmer. Also in the household is a nephew Fred Kirkpatrick born October 1885. Wallis is a farmer. Ealonore is the mother of 5, 4 of whom are currently alive.

Wallis Kirkpatrick is a son of James and Mary (Kennell) Kirkpatrick, and was born in Wayne County, MO, April 21, 1840. The parents and paternal grandfather were natives of Tennessee, and came to Wayne County in 1831, where James Kirkpatrick entered and cleared land. By earnest endeavor he became the poss3essor of 400 acres of land. He was Sheriff of Wayne County for one term, and also held the offices of County Judge several years, Assessor, and Justice of the Peace. He was born in 1804 and died in 1867. His wife was born in 1802, and died in 1871. Six of their twelve children are living: Andrew J., Wallis, James, Zerilda (Butler), Mary (Davis) and Minerva (Hopies). Wallis Kirkpatrick has been identified with Wayne County for nearly haf a century. He began working for himself at the age of twenty years, at which time he married Missouri A. Barnhart, and by her became the father of five children, two of whom are living, James H. and Viola F. (Yates). Mr. Kirkpatrick has a fine farm of 110 acres, located on the St. Francis River. In 1862 he enlisted in Company H, Thirty-first Missouri Infantry and served about fourteen months. He was at the siege of Vicksburg and was wounded in the thigh by a gun-shot, and was taken to the hospital at Paducah, Ky. Two months later he rejoined his regiment, and the following July was sent to Jefferson Barracks hospital, where he remained for about four months. In November, 1863, he was discharged and came home. His wife died in 1870 and in 1871 he was united in marriage to Eleanor A. Cowan, and two children have been the result of their union. Mr. and Mrs. Kirkpatrick are members of the Baptist Church, and he belongs to the I.O.O.F. and Farmers' Alliance.
