Mary Ann Kirkpatrick

Mary Ann Kirkpatrick was born 2 March 1820 in South Carolina. On 12 March 1840 she married John Thomas Sherer, son of William and Martha (Minter) Sherer, who was born 16 September 1815 in Bullock's Creek, York County, South Carolina and died 7 November 1899 on his farm near Jasper, Walker County, Alabama. It is not know when Mary Ann died, but although she had ten children, It is probable she died fairly young, for John Thomas married second to Mary Ann Shepherd, daughter of Jeremiah and Keziah Shepherd, and had four more children, Nedora, Julia Ann, Henrietta, and Lula.
Mary Ann, along with her four sisters who married Sherers, and her brother William R. Kirkpatrick, all migrated to Walker County, Alabama in the mid 1850's. Her husband, John Thomas, entered government land near Jasper in Walker County on 23 September 1857, and he continued to farm this land until his death. In 1888, the same year that Jasper was incorporated, a Presbyterian Church was established there. John Thomas was the first Ruling Elder.
