Bakersfield Californian, Bakersfield, California, Saturday, October 14, 1944, Page 3, Cols. 1 & 2: Brothers---Heber Earl Clason, motor machinist's mate third class, 22, enlisted in January 1944, and after attending "boot camp" at Farragut, Idaho, Diesel school at Ames, Iowa, and advanced training at Norfolk, Va., he was assigned to a ship. He had previously worked a year in the Hawaiian Islands in defense work and was employed by the Greyhound Bus Depot. His brother, Calvin Lyle Clason, fireman second class, 18, a graduate of East Bakersfield High School, enlisted in February, 1944 and after "boot camp" at San Diego he was sent to an electrical school at St. Louis, Mo. They are sons of Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Clason, 1111 Virginia street. A picture of each man in uniform is included in the article.

Calvin Lyle Clason, 88, passed away Sunday, April 27, 2014 at his home in Bakersfield, California. Cal was born March 22, 1926 to Henry Clay and Lonnie Era (Thorn) Clason in Calumet, Oklahoma. He graduated from East Bakersfield High School in 1944. Cal served in the US Navy during WWII on the LCT 771 at Peleliu. He also served on the USS Compel. He was privileged to make a trip to Washington DC in April 2013, through Honor Flight Kern County, to fulfill his dream of visiting the war monuments. After his military service, Cal worked as a country musician in Bakersfield, playing popular honky-tonks like the Blackboard; his music took him to Idaho where he met his wife, Arleah Hope "Dee" Flowerdew. They married in 1953 in Aztec, New Mexico then moved to Honolulu, Hawaii, in March of 1954, where he continued his musical career. Cal also worked in construction in Hawaii, and owned a cabinet shop in Hilo. After moving the family to Bakersfield in 1967, Cal began his career with the California Department of Corrections. He retired from the CDC as the vocational mill and cabinet instructor at the State Prison in Tehachapi. Cal was an avid rockhound and lapidarist. He and Dee shared many adventures as active members of the San Joaquin Valley Lapidary Society and the California Federation of Mineralogical Societies (CFMS). Cal is survived by his wife of sixty years, Arleah "Dee", and five children: Kathleen Murray and Christene Harris, and her husband Trent, all of Idaho, Dr. Dennis Clason of Las Cruces, NM, and his wife, Susana; Pamela Jackson of Sanger, CA, and her husband, Steve; Dean Clason of Bakersfield and his wife Shari. He also is survived by 12 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren. A celebration of Cal's life will be held on Friday, May 23, 2014 at 1:00 pm at KLEA Banquet Hall, 3417 Pegasus Dr., in Bakersfield. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Cal's honor to the CFMS Endowment Fund, c/o Pat LaRue, PO Box 1657, Rialto, CA 92377-1657, or the donor's favorite charity.
