Berkeley Daily Gazette, Wednesday evening, July 11, 1934, Page 2, Col. 8: Reports Family of Dead Man Cared for. Despite charges made by Mrs. Lena Phelps, 1514 Chestnut Street, that her husband was forced to return to work because county charity organizations had refused to provide further aid, Mrs. Katherine Van Dewer, director of the Transient Family Service, Oakland, today stated that she has been supplying the family with food, medical care and clothing.

Harry M. Phelps, 34, the husband and father, died Monday night shortly after he returned home from working at a job he received that day. Mrs. Phelps said her husband, although desperately ill, had been forced to take the work because they had been declared ineligible for further charity.

"The Phelps family has been receiving assistance from our organization since June 7, when they were transferred to us from the Alameda County Charity Commission," Miss Van Dewer stated. "Two weeks ago Mr. Phelps was given a two week's grocery order, medicine and told at that time that he was not to attempt any labor of any sort because of his physical condition. We have received word from authorities at Kalamazoo, Michigan, home of the Phelps family, that they would authorize the return of the family to that city and care for them. We have at all times provided the family with the necessities of life and will continue to do so as long as they live within our jurisdiction."

Funeral arrangements for Mr. Phelps are being delayed pending the arrival of a brother from the East, according to Deputy Coroner E. E. Niehaus.
