On the 1920 U. S. Census of Milan, Sullivan Co., Missouri, Royal L. Garner appears with his wife Margaret E. and son Lyman [Lynn]. Royal's occupation is M. D. in general practice.

From the Milan newspaper of Milan, Missouri, unknown date: Royal L. Garner, son of Henry and Tabitha Garner was born in Stark County, Ill., March 29, 1861, and passed away at his home in Milan, Mo., early Monday morning, Jan. 4, 1943, at the age of 81 years, 9 months and 5 days. At the age of three years he came with his parents to Missouri and located in Putnam Co. after attending rural school, he graduated from Unionville High School, Unionville, MO., and then taught several terms of rural school in that county. Obtaining funds in that way to enter a pre-Medical College, old Avalon College near Chillicothe, Mo. There followed more years of teaching and employment in a dairy and service as a telegraph operator in the state of Colorado, to finance his entrance to Missouri Medical College of St. Louis. In 1898 he obtained a scholarship in chemistry, which enabled him to attend another year in the college, following which he took his last year in medicine and received his M. D. degree from Marion Sims-Beaumont Medical College in St. Louis. This school being formed by one of several mergers in medical schools at that time. The medical part of that school later became part of the St. Louis University, of which he has for years been an active Alumnus. After his graduation in 1900 he started the practice of medicine at Pollock, Mo. It was here that he met and on October 30, 1904 was married to Miss Maggie E. Mason, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Mason of Pollock. One son, Lynn Mason Garner was born to them. Early in his married life he and his wife took time off from his medical practice to homestead a 60 acre farm in South Dakota, and in 1915 he took a years instruction at Bellevue Hospital in New York City where he specialized in the study of skin diseases, after which he located in Kansas City, Mo., where he practiced this specialty for two years. In later years, until recently he moved to Milan and took over the practice of Dr. W. L. M. Witter. For some time he held a half interest in the South Side drug store. During that time he passed an examination and held a diploma of a licenses pharmacist. In later years, until recently he kept up his office practice. Since joining the Masonic Lodge at Pollock, he has been very active in Masonic circles and services as Worshipful Master of the Pollock Lodge and later as Master of Seaman Lodge at Milan and as High Priest of Milan Royal Arch Chapter and different offices in the higher degrees in Masonic orders. His wife having passed away March 25, 1931, he is survived by his son, Doctor Lynn Mason Garner of Higginsville, Mo., and a grandson Royal Garner of Higginsville. He is also survived by two brothers, W. A. Garner of Unionville, Mo.; Ira P. Garner of Genoa, Colo., and his wife's sister, Miss Bertha Mason, who has attended him the last ten years. Services were held at the Methodist church in Milan, Wednesday, Jan. 6, 1943, at 2:00 p.m., conducted by Rev. John P. Ingerslew, and with song service by Mrs. Eula Shatto, Mrs. Bertha Wilson, Chas. E. Smith, and John Jennings, and Mrs. Chas. E. Smith at the piano. Followed by the Masonic burial rites performed by officers and members of Seaman Lodge No. 125, A. F. & A. M. of Milan. Members of the Order acting as pall bearers, Ola Clark, Ross Baldwin, A. L. Berry, M. H. Wall, L. E. Bauman, J. L. Berrey and Emerson Perkins. Burial was made at Lemons, Mo., cemetery. Among the relatives and friends from out-of-town attending funeral rites for Dr. R. L. Garner were Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Garner, Unionville; Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Mason, Shattuck, Okla.; Mrs. Libbie Woolridge, Kansas City; Miss Dollie Mason, Lemons; Dr. and Mrs. Lynn M. Garner and son, Royal, Higginsville; Frank Hunter and Raymond Hunter of Unionville.
