Edith Elizabeth Chase

The Billings Outpost, Billings, Montana, February, 24, 2008: Edith Elizabeth Herbert, 99, who lived most of her life in Glendive, died Tuesday evening, Feb. 12. She was born Nov. 3, 1908, to William and Sophia Chase in Eckman, N.D. She spent her childhood in Sidney where she and her sisters were raised by their father after her mother died of influenza when Edith was 7 years old. She then worked in Glendive at Carey’s Sweet Shop and the Northern Pacific Hospital. On June 18, 1931, she married Ernest Herbert. They lived in Glendive until his death on Oct. 20, 1990. She was a member of the Evangelical Church of North America in Glendive for 60 years. After Mr. Herbert’s death, she moved to Billings to be near her family and resided at St. John’s Lutheran Home for more than 17 years. Survivors include a daughter, Geraldine Hauck of Billings; a son, Richard of Hanover, Md.; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. Services were held Feb. 18 at Ocee Johnson Chapel at St. John’s. Interment was in Dawson Memorial Park in Glendive. Michelotti-Sawyers Mortuary had charge of arrangements. Memorials are suggested to St. John’s Lutheran Home.
