The Examiner, Independence - Blue Springs - Grain Valley, Missouri, Thursday, September 6, 2001: Robert M. Addison, 87, Independence, died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2001, at University of Kansas Medical Center. Mr. Addison was born Dec. 8, 1913, in Pelzer, S.C., the son of James and Lora (Mahaffey) Addison. He graduated from Pelzer High School and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1931. In the late 1930s, he was an overseer and foreman in textile mills in Greer and Spartanburg, S.C. He re-enlisted in the Navy and served from 1943 to 1945 as instructor of physical training at Park College, Parkville, Mo., and the Great Lakes Naval Training Center. He married Donna Reese on Oct. 11, 1957, in Independence. He received a bachelors degree in economics from Kansas City University (now UMKC) in 1951. He worked for the U.S. Supply Co. and was elected president and general manager of the company in 1973. In 1981, he became president and CEO of the U.S. Supply Group, retiring in 1984. He was awarded the UMKC Alumni Achievement Award in 1984. He served as president of the American Supply Association, was chairman of the Board of Trustees of Baptist Memorial Hospital and Baptist Health Systems, was president of the Central Industrial District of Kansas City, and was a member of the board of Associated Business Services Inc. He was chairman of the board of Commerce Bank of Independence, was a member of the board of directors of the Kansas City Rotary Club, a member of the Kansas City Breakfast Club, was chairman of the Citizens Goals Committee of Independence, and a trustee emeritus of William Jewell College. He was a member of Maywood Baptist Church, Ararat Shrine Temple and the Masonic Lodge. He served as a baseball coach in the Queen City Athletic Association from 1971 to 1973. He was preceded in death by six sisters and one brother. His survivors include his wife, Donna Addison; a daughter and son-in-law, Robba and Jerry Moran, Hays, Kan.; a son and daughter-in-law, John and Ann Addison, Overland Park, Kan.; two granddaughters, Kelsey and Alex Moran; one brother, John Thomas, Pelzer; and two sisters, Norma Shuman, Pelzer, and Flara Bolick, Gastonia, N.C. Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be at Mount Washington Forever Cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel.
