Daytona Beach News-Journal, Daytona, Florida, Thursday, December 3, 2015: John Charles Toenjes, 92, of DeLand, FL entered Heaven on November 25, 2015 surrounded by family at Halifax Care-Hospice, Orange City, FL. He was born on June 20, 1923 in Seymour, IN to John Martin Toenjes and Lillian Vahl Toenjes. John is survived by his three daughters, Patricia Cregar, Pamela Swanto (Michael), Gay Toenjes, his sister, Esther Dechow (Jon), grandchildren, great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by his loving wife of 62 years, Alice Anderson Toenjes, eldest daughter, Joan Marie Toenjes, his parents, two brothers, two sisters, and a nephew. John graduated from Shields High School, Seymour, IN, and was a graduate of Indiana College of Mortuary Sciences Indianapolis, IN before enlisting in the US Navy serving as a Pharmacist Mate First Class during WWII. Returning from service, John was employed for 17 years by the Indianapolis Times newspaper, and wrote a weekly Stamps and Coin column. In 1963, working full-time, involved in church activities, and raising a family, John graduated from the University of Indianapolis earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration at age 40. John continued in the newspaper industry for 22 years in advertising sales management in the Chicago area and Florida. John finally retired in 2006, at the age of 83, after working 18 years with Volusia County Public Schools as a substitute teacher and contract employee in ESE. His students affectionately called him 'Mr. T'.
