BIOGRAPHY-CHILDREN: Genealogy of Borden Family of Shrewsbury, NJ; 1370-1868; typescript of "Borden Scrapbook" & family papers in poss of Charles F. In 1635 he sailed on the Elizabeth and Ann to New England arriving in Boston neck near Roxberry, Mass. On 10 June 1638 he was admitted as inhabitant of the Island Aquidneck (North end of the island of Rhode Island), having submitted himself to the government that shall be established. He was a man of education having been taken under the protection of his uncle who was Dean of the Cathedral Church at Rochester. He was a surveyor and was contracted on 2 Nov 1638 to survey and map or plot all lands near about. They were staunch Quakers and became members of the Rhode Island Colony. He signed the Freeman's oath on 16 March 1641. In 1653-4 he was elected treasurer of the United Colonies. He owned works in R.I. and in Monmouth Co., East Jersey. On 6 Sep 1651 he bought sixty acres, Shadrach Manton Land of Providence, near Newtokonkonut Hill. He was governor's assistant at Providence Plantation, 1653-4, commissioner from Portsmouth to the General Court 1654-57, treasurer of the United Colonies 1654-55, Deputy from Portsmouth to the General Assembly of Rhode Island 1667, 1670, and a member of council of Way in 1675. On 23 June 1664 the Duke of York granted Shrewsbury, East Jersey to Sir George Carteret and Richard established there. In 1667 he was one of the original purchasers of lands in New Jersey from certain Indians. He was buried in the burial ground of the Society of Friends at Portsmouth, R.I. The children's births documented by the Friend's Monthly meetings at Newport. His nuncupative will was admitted to probate 31 May 1671 by Town Council of Portsmouth. May 1- Executor, son Matthew.
