Wendell V. Kirkpatrick

The San Diego Union, Wednesday, January 15, 1964, Page 5: Wendell V. Kirkpatrick, 54, of 1260 Myrtle Ave., head of a secretarial school and inventor of a shorthand machine, died yesterday in a hospital. He suffered a heart attack Dec. 18. Kirkpatrick, a native of Blandinsville, Ill., lived here 33 years. He and a sister, Mrs. Gladys LaMonte of San Diego, started the former San Diego College of Commerce in 1933. During World war II he was general office manager of Ryan Aeronautical Co. In 1940 he built a rough model of a shorthand device, which he called Brevitype, but did not develop it completely until 1946. The machine, in wide use, has been manufactured here since then. Kirkpatrick headed the Brevitype Secretarial school at 3940 Fifth Ave. Kirkpatrick was a 1930 graduate of Knox College in Gales burg, Ill. He was an accomplished organist. He was a past president of the Executives Association. Surviving, in addition to his sister, are his widow, Margaret; two sons, Kim and Robert, both of San Diego; a daughter, Mrs. Peggy Callaway of Spring Valley, and a grandson. Services will be at 2 p.m. tomorrow in Benbough Moruary. Entombment will be in Cypress View Mausoleum.
