Frederick News Post, Frederick, Maryland, Thursday, September 11, 1986, Page 5, Col. 2: Mrs. Geneva L. VanDament Barthel. Largely attended funeral services for Mrs. Geneva Laura VanDament Barthel of Braddock Heights, will-known civic leader, who died Sunday, Sept. 7, at Frederick Memorial Hospital, were held Wednesday, Sept. 10, from the Etchison Memorial Chapel of the Smith, Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St. The Rev. Burnis D. Barrett, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiated. Attending the services were members of various organizations of which Mrs. Barthel was a member. Bearers were Richard C. C. Basford, Harry Kintz, Keith L. Roberson and Donald L. Plunkard. Interment was in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Mrs. Barthel was the wife of George J. Barthel.

Many, many people were saddened this week upon hearing of the death of Geneva Barthel, a woman who served this community for 23 years as the leader of Frederick County's social service department. In fact, quite a few people will mark her time as a helper to the community beyond those years as the department's director. She began working as a social worker in 1936, when the federal Social Security Act was passed and came to Frederick in 1955. Several years ago, when she retired, she said: "I guess all we really tried to do was help people with their needs the best we could." She was modest and sincere. She championed the causes for the less fortunate. Her friends in the Braddock Heights area, where she lived, certainly feel a loss. So do all of us who appreciated her hard work and who benefited from her concern for the community.
