Posted at findagrave.com: Carroll J. "Skitch" Henderson. ROSEVILLE - Carroll J. Henderson, Roseville, died Friday (June 18) at 1:43 a.m. at OSF Holy Family Medical Center in Monmouth. Carroll was born Dec. 1, 1930 in Raymond, Ill., to Harold J. Henderson and Abigail Beatrice (Custer). He was one of five children and was raised in nearby Litchfield, along with his brothers and sisters, Robert, Victor, Virginia and Marilyn. As a teenager, Carroll became interested in jazz and big band music. He played trumpet in the Litchfield High School band as well as in a small jazz combo that played each Saturday night in a small club near Litchfield. His interest in music led him to follow many of the noted performers of the big band era. His favorite musician was Harry James, whom he saw play live in St. Louis. Carroll also managed to see several other great performers of that era play live, including Louis Armstrong, Tommy Dorsey and Stan Kenton. Carroll attended Milliken University in Decatur, where he studied music, graduating in 1953 with a bachelor's degree in music. After college, Carroll served in the Army and was stationed at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri. Upon completion of his military service, Carroll began his long teaching career in Roseville in 1955. Carroll taught music for 31 years in the Roseville school system, and many local residents first learned to play an instrument under his guidance. The Roseville High School band and its students participated in numerous competitions through the years, receiving high marks during that time. Even after retiring from teaching, Carroll continued his service to the Roseville community schools as a bus driver for an additional 17 years. Carroll married Roseville native, Norma Marie Kirkpatrick, on June 19, 1957, in the Kirkpatrick family home, one mile east of Roseville. Carroll and Norma went on to have three children, Kirk, Krista and Kent, who were all raised in the Roseville community. Many local residents knew Carroll by his nickname, "Skitch," a name associated with late 1950s Tonight Show band leader, "Skitch" Henderson. He was a member of the American Legion for 50 years, as well as being a member of the Shriners organization. Carroll also developed an interest in antique automobiles and amassed a collection of miniature (or "matchbox") replicas of vintage cars. Carroll enjoyed working in his yard and was proud of the yard and garden that he and Norma worked to develop over the years. Carroll is survived by his wife, Norma; his sister, Marilyn; as well as his children: Kirk (and wife Jennifer) of Atlanta, Ga.; Krista of Roseville; Kent of Chicago, and grandchildren Abigail and Emma of Atlanta. Visitation will be at Corman Funeral Home Monday from 5-7 p.m. Funeral service will be at Corman Funeral Home at 11 a.m. Tuesday, with burial at the Roseville Cemetery following the service.
