Kearney Hub, Kearney, Nebraska, Tuesday, October 2, 2012: Holdrege--- Carroll LeRoi Falk, 94, of Holdrege died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2012, at Christian Homes in Holdrege. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Wilcox Community Church with the Rev. Craig Cedar officiating. Burial will be at Salem (Methodist Episcopal) Cemetery in rural Axtell with military honors by veterans organizations of Wilcox and Hildreth. Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Thursday at Banta-Torrey Funeral Home in Wilcox with the family present from 6-8 p.m.

He was born Dec. 21, 1917, in Phelps County near Loomis to Manly and Sigrid (Mattson) Falk. On Sept. 29, 1940, he married Leona Musil. Survivors include his loving and devoted wife of Christian Homes in Holdrege; sons, Ron Falk and his wife, Carroll Jean, of Albion and Melvin Falk and his wife, Susan, of rural Wilcox; brothers, Maynard Falk of Chrisoma West at Holdrege, Dale Falk and his wife, Glaura, of Beatrice and Robert Falk and his wife, Doris, of Lincoln; sister-in-law, Ruth Falk, wife of Orville Falk, of Lincoln; six grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends. He was the first of five sons in his family. Carroll was baptized at Moses Hill Covenant Church near Loomis. He attended school at Hillside School District 49, north of Loomis, through the fifth grade and attended sixth through eighth grades at Rural School District 39 north of Axtell. He attended high school at Wilcox where he graduated with the class of 1935. Carroll later attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Kearney State Teachers College.

He and Leona were married at the home of the bride's parents, Ed and Helen Musil, at Holdrege. They had observed their 72nd wedding anniversary this past Saturday, Sept. 29, 2012, in Holdrege, Carroll served in the U.S. Army from Aug. 6, 1945, until Oct. 22, 1946. He served stateside and in Japan. They resided in Wilcox where Carroll and Leona operated Falk's Produce and later Falk's Texaco Service Station. Carroll was a substitute mail carrier and later became postmaster and served from 1960 until 1987. Carroll was a member of the Wilcox Community Church, which he had served as church secretary and Sunday school superintendent. He served as chairman of the Salvation Army. He was a member of the Wilcox Lions Club and served as secretary for many years.

He was a member of the Wilcox Chamber of Commerce and the South Platte United Chambers of Commerce. He served as mayor of Wilcox, was a member of Wilcox American Legion Post 377 and the Wilcox Veterans of Foreign Wars Post. He served as Red Cross chairman, and he was a member of the Hudson Car Club, as well as several other car clubs. He was a member of Gideons International, Holdrege Camp, and he was a 50-year member of the Wilcox Fire Department and served on the first emergency medical technician squad. He drove a school bus, was founder of the Wilcox baseball program and helped with the Peewee's and girls softball. He was active in the League of Postmasters and the National Association of Postmasters. He was instrumental in bringing natural gas to the village of Wilcox. He was preceded in death by his father on Feb. 7, 1964; his mother on Aug. 4, 1990; his brother, Orville Falk on Sept. 1, 2009; and sister-in-law, Beulah Falk, wife of Maynard Falk, on June 12, 2004. Memorials are suggested to Gideons International.
