Arlene Ethel Urbom

Arlene Ethel Wehland, of Wahoo, Nebraska (formerly of Holdrege) passed away on January 22, 2007 in Lincoln, Nebraska. Arlene Ethel (Urbom) Wehland was born March 2, 1919 three miles east of Atlanta in Phelps County, Nebraska, the eldest of six children of Adolph Walter and Ethel Belle (Johnston) Urbom. One year later the family moved ½ mile south and ½ mile west of the original home and into Harlan County. She attended her first through 8th grade of school in District 46 "Graft" school in Harlan County. She attended high school for two years in Atlanta and two years in Mascot, graduating in 1936.

At two months of age, Arlene was baptized in the Methodist Church in Atlanta. She joined the 1st Evangelical Church of Mascot in April of 1935 and later joined the First United Methodist Church of Holdrege, where she was a member for over 50 years. She was an active member of the church and Women's Society. She taught Sunday School in Holdrege for 25 years and directed Bible School many times. In October 2002, she moved to Wahoo, Nebraska and continued her membership in the church and United Methodist Women.

As a young girl she joined 4-H clubs and was an active member. In 1935 in Harlan County she became an assistant leader and in 1936 a leader. She joined an Extension Club in 1936 in Harlan County, later organizing one in Holdrege. Besides 4-H and Extension Clubs, she was a Den Mother and Campfire leader for many years. On August 25, 1940 she married Guy Royneil Wehland and they made their home in Holdrege. To this union seven children were born; Richard Neil, Leland Roy, Virginia Arlene, Cynthia Ethel, Merrill Guy, Valerie Leona, and Boyd Leroy.

Posted at Find-A-Grave.com: Arlene worked at Christian Homes, Methodist Memorial Homes, and Pamida in Holdrege until her retirement. Throughout her life she enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting, and quilting. She made afghans and quilts for many family, friends, and church projects.

She leaves to mourn her passing her sons and their wives: Richard Wehland and his wife, Margrett of Fairmont, Nebraska, Leland Wehland and his wife, Gladys of Snohomish , WA and Boyd Wehland of Holdrege; her daughters and their husbands: Cynthia Falk and her husband, Nick of Lincoln and Valerie Jackson and her husband, Ken of Wahoo; sixteen grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; one brother, Eugene Urbom and his wife, Mildred of Overton, Nebraska; one sister, Faye Peterson of Holdrege and a host of other relatives and friends. She was "Mom" and "Grandma" to many others, including an exchange student, Suvi Kallio and her family from Finland and AnnaBelle Casey of Cozad. She was preceded in death by her parents: Ethel and Walter Urbom; her husband, Guy Royneil Wehland on June 17, 1975; two children: Virginia Arlene and Merrill Guy; and two brothers: James and Andrew Urbom and one sister, Blanche Renken.
