pdf at www.mainemason.orgJames C Furnival, 67, director of welfare for the City of Portland for the past 13 years and a member of the city government since 1915, died early this morning in a local hospital after an illness of several days.
His physician said he had suffered from a severe heart ailment.
Furnival had been in charge of welfare department since 1937. Prior to that he had served as secretary to City Managers Harry A. Brinkerhoff and James E. Barlow.
In the interim between the two managers, Mr. Furnival served as acting city manager. He also served the city as purchasing agent and in other capacities.
He entered the city's employ in 1915 as messenger.
During his 35 years of service, Mr. Furnival was noted for this thorough understanding of city affairs and for his tact and diplomacy in dealing with people.
A native of Portland he was born in October, 1882. As a young boy he went to schools in this city and attended secondary schools in Canada, where he graduated from high school.
He was a member of the Portland Lodge of Elks and Ancient Landmark Lodge of Masons. He held the rank of major in the army's quartermaster corps.
He leaves his widow, Mrs. Doris Mudd Furnival, a daughter, Miss Marjorie Furnival; a son, William R. Furnival; and two sisters, Mrs. Claire Colvin, Vancouver, B.C., and Mrs. W. A. Templeton, Toronto, Ont.

Portland, Me., Aug. 3 AP -- James C. Furnival, a Portland city official since 1915, died of a heart ailment early today. He was 67 years old. His widow, Doris, and two children survive.
