Eliza Jane PULSIPHER
(26 Jul 1840 - 5 May 1919)
!Second Wife of Thomas Sirls Terry. Midwife. Lived in Panaca, Nevada. Mother of twelve children. Died age 78. Moved to Panaca to raise her daughter Sarah Mariah's children when Sarah Mariah died in 1885!
!Eliza Jane Pulsipher was born at Nauvoo, Adams County, Illinois, & was 7 when she crossed the plains arriving in the Valley 22 Sep 1848. She married Thomas Sirls Terry 6 May 1855, at age 14. He went that winter on a mission and she spent the winter alone in a log cabin pregnant living on roots she dug from under the river bank with snow sometimes up to her window. She spent Christmas on the trail being called to Dixie. She was a trained mide-wife. She delivered babies from Panaca, Clover Valley, Hebron, and Shoal Creek. Independent, ambitious, could not tolorate idleness. Her price for confinement was $10.00, very independent, many people came to depend on her especially in sickness and child birth, she bought her own home, always had plenty of money of her own, wore a black dress with big pockets, there was always a dollar in those big pockets to help anyone in need. If she needed work done there were men who owed her for doctor bills who were glad to do it. Her hair was parted in the middle and drawn to the back. She prepared meals for 40 men on the job. She was the mother of twelve children. Her husband's first wife had daughters but Eliza Jane was the first to bear him a son. She never complained. She was cheerful and even tempered. She prepared the finest meals and kept her home lovely and clean. Compassionate, independent, capable, never complaining, of great faith, a lovely woman with brown hair. She was very tender with the sick. She purchased a home in Panaca with her own money. She was a devoted wife and a loving mother. Died 5 May 1919 in Panaca, Buried at Panaca.
