William Terril HUNT

(24 Jan 1920 - 2 Dec 2005)

I was born January 24, 1920 the sixth child of ten children to Thomas Elmer and Emma Day Hunt. I was named William Terril Hunt and called Bill.

We lived at the ranch, ten miles west of enterprise in the summertime, then lived in town in the wintertime, so the children could attend school. I loved to live at the ranch. We had to pack water in buckets from a spring across the meadow. One fall and winter I got to spend some time alone with my Dad, which was very special to me. The other kids were in school or too young to go.

In the summertime our toys would be bones from dead animals representing cows, horses, etc. I would build corrals out of sticks tied together with string and rocks etc.

Once when I was probably in the 1st or 2nd grade I came up missing and the whole town turned out to look for me. I was under a bed fast asleep.

When we lived at the ranch, we milked cows. Then we would scoop the cream off the top and take buckets of cream on our horses to Enterprise. By the time weud get to town, the cream would be churned into butter.

I played basketball in high school. Away games were tough, however. By the time weud get to a game, Iud be so sick I couldnut play ball. The winding of the old dirt road up Cottonwood and the motion of the vehicle was just too much for my stomach. I also played M-Men ball, and went to salt lake City several times with ball teams.

I was the first one drafted in the army for World War II from Enterprise. I went to Fort Leanard Wodd, Missouri, to Camp Abbott, Oregon and to Fort Lewis, Washington.

It was while stationed at Camp Abbott that I met my future wife Jessie Edith Graves. Edith came to Oregon to a rodeo that was being held there. We fell in love and were married in Portland on January 22, 1945.

I continued serving in the army. When I was finally mustard out of the army, we moved our little family back to Utah where we bought the 160 acre Sevy farm in March of 1946. Here we lived and raised our family of nine children: Roy, Carol, Gaylene, Marita, Terril, Kristine, Annette, Darla and Shawn. Farming, feeding cattle and keeping up with the childrenus sports and rodeos kept us very busy.

Several years after buying the farm, we built a new house on the farm. We raised alfalfa, barley, corn and potatoes. I would feed out cattle every fall. We bought cattle and range rights from the Terry Ranch.

In my lifetime, I have run cattle for Charlie Foster and later managed the R. J. Kaltenborn Ranch for several years. This ranch took in most of the area west of Enterprise all the way to the Hunt and Terryus ranches up the canyon. I ran cattle for A.B. Larson on their ranch at Beryl and Jackson Wash for ten years. Then I worked four years for Bob Holt working with his cattle. Three years ago I went to work for Spilsbury Land and Livestock on Cedar Mountain and Sant Mountain down by Hurricane where I still work. We enjoy spending the summerus on Cedar Mountain where it is cool.

We sold our main herd to Terril several yearrs ago,k but we still have 50 head we run on Sevy bench and on the Mountain with the Spilsbury cattle.

We all worked hard, but also played hard. Edith and I always supported the children in their rodeos although I was only able to make it to one National Final with them in Bozeman, Montana. Edith took the children to 16 Natioanl Final Rodeous both high school and college.
